Hilal Lashuel , PhD
Professor of Neuroscience in Neurology

Prof. Hilal Lashuel is a Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine Qatar and the Research Development and Innovation Advisor to the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation and Executive Director of RDI at the Chairperson’s Office, and Chair of the Board of Awsaj Academy. He is also a Professor Emeritus at EPFL and Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of ND BioSciences SA.

Professor Lashuel received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from the City University of New York in 1994 and completed his doctoral studies at Texas A&M University and the Scripps Research Institute in 2000. Following his doctorate, he joined the Picower Institute for Medical Research in Long Island, New York, as a research scientist. In 2001, he moved to Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a research fellow in the Center for Neurologic Diseases, later being promoted to an instructor in Neurology at Harvard Medical School. In 2005, Prof. Lashuel transitioned to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) where he served as the Director of the Laboratory of Molecular and Chemical Biology of Neurodegeneration. His research focuses on applying chemical biology approaches to elucidate the mechanisms of protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases, with an emphasis on developing novel disease models and mechanism-based therapies and diagnostics for early intervention and monitoring disease progression.

In addition to these roles, Prof. Lashuel was a visiting professor at the Department of Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. He also serves as an advisor for several national, regional and international research organizations and foundations, including the Michael J Fox Foundation, King Hussein Cancer Research Center International Medical Advisory Board, and Worldwide Innovative Network (WIN) Association (Scientific Advisory Board), and Chair of Awsaj Academy Board. He is an Associate Editor for the Science Journal Science, npj Parkisons’s disease (2022-2025) Advances and a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of Qatar Biomedical Research and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Qatar Biobank and Qatar Genome Project from 2014-2016. He was also Vice Chair of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of Qatar Biobank from 2016-2019. His extensive service includes leadership roles in the Qatar Metabolic Institute Research Group, the Qatar Cancer Research Partnership, and numerous national and international boards and committees, including the Joint Qatar Foundation-Weill Cornell Medicine Qatar Advisory Board, the Path Towards Personalized Medicine (PTPM) Steering Committee of the Qatar National Research Fund, and the Brain Forum Scientific Advisory Board.

Prof. Lashuel's scientific contributions include: 1) 240 publications in peer-reviewed journals; 2) Nine patents on novel strategies for detecting and preventing protein aggregation, treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases; 3) Over 260 invited lectures; and 3) More than 35,500 citations with an h-index of 99. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Takreem Foundation's Scientific & Technological Achievement Award, the Kuwait Prize in Fundamental Sciences (Biological Sciences), the H. Martin Friedman Distinguished Lecture at Brooklyn College (CUNY), Murray Barr distinguish Lecture at Western University, and the EPFL-Section of Life Sciences and Technologies Ambition Award, ERC starting and proof of concept grants, and the Human Frontiers Science Young Investigator Award. In 2012, he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and was featured by the Swiss business magazine L'Hebdo among the "100 outstanding personalities” in the French-speaking part of Switzerland (Forum des 100)

Noura Aldous
Noura Aldous, PhD
Senior Research Specialist

Noura Aldous is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Lashuel Lab at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar. Her research uses human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived models to investigate the molecular and cellular determinants of alpha-synuclein pathology formation and clearance in Parkinson's disease and related synucleinopathies, within the framework of the lab's ASAP-funded grants and through championing collaborations with the lab's research partners. Her work includes a focus on disease-associated lysosomal mutations and their downstream effects on neuronal dysfunction, and contributes to an interdisciplinary consortium developing a novel human iPSC-derived tri-culture model designed to more accurately capture the cellular complexity underlying Parkinson's disease pathogenesis.

Noura earned her PhD in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), where her doctoral research investigated the transcription factors and non-coding RNA regulatory networks governing human pancreatic β-cell differentiation and islet development, using hESC- and hiPSC-derived models. This work included generating gene-specific knockout iPSC lines to model disease phenotypes, performing functional studies on stem cell-derived pancreatic islets, and applying transcriptomic analyses to uncover novel regulatory pathways. She also holds an MSc in Biological and Biomedical Sciences from HBKU and a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from Qatar University.

Her research has resulted in seven peer-reviewed publications in journals including Diabetologia, Genes & Diseases, Stem Cell Reviews and Reports, and Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, several as first or co-first author, with one study selected as a journal cover feature. Her contributions have been recognized with a number of honors, including the Sidra Medicine Best Early Career Researcher award, an ISSCR 2025 Travel Award, and multiple best-poster awards at regional and international conferences. Ola Hussein
Ola Hussein, PhD
Senior Research Specialist

Ola Hussein, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Lashuel Laboratory at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar. She earned her BSc in Pharmacy with distinction from Qatar University in 2018, followed by an MSc in Medicinal Chemistry with distinction in 2021, where she focused on the design, synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of novel small molecules as potential anticancer therapeutics. She was subsequently awarded the highly competitive Graduate Sponsorship Research Award (GSRA) from Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) to pursue her PhD in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Qatar University in collaboration with Sidra Medicine. Her doctoral research focused on the immune landscape of colorectal cancer stem cells and its implications for cancer immunotherapy.

Dr. Hussein's research bridges chemistry and biology, integrating medicinal chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, immunology, and translational research to investigate disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic opportunities. Building on this interdisciplinary foundation, her current research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, where she applies chemical biology and mechanistic cell biology approaches to investigate protein misfolding, aggregation, and clearance, and to identify therapeutic targets.

Dr. Hussein's work has resulted in a U.S. non-provisional patent application and 16 peer-reviewed publications as first or co-author. Her research has been recognized with multiple awards at regional and international conferences, including best poster awards at the GCC Pharmacy Congress (Dubai), the International Pharmaceutical Conference (Amman, Jordan), and the Qatar University Annual Research Forum.
