Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women globally and in Qatar. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed in October, a time when individuals, health organizations, and communities around the world unite to raise awareness, share knowledge, and support those affected by breast cancer. Let us all join together to emphasize the importance of regular screening, early detection, comprehensive treatment, and support individuals battling the disease.
Breast health awareness
Raising awareness about the importance of breast health is crucial. Risk factors for breast cancer include non-modifiable factors such as being female, advanced age, having a family history or personal history of breast cancer. However, there are lifestyle-related modifiable factors that can help lower the risk of breast cancer. These include maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, breast feeding, quitting smoking, limiting or abstaining from alcohol, and limiting hormonal therapy following menopause. Let us all pledge to raise awareness about breast cancer, its risk factors and the importance of screening. In Qatar, the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) offers “Screen for Life” free screening services to all women aged 45 and above to detect breast cancer early.
Emotional and community support:
For individuals battling breast cancer, emotional support plays a vital role. Simply listening and being present can be invaluable, allowing the person to express their fears, frustrations, and hopes without judgement. Encourage participation in or help connect with local breast cancer support groups. In Qatar, the “Your smile is our Life” program offers a safe space for patients, survivors, and their families to share their journey, express emotions, access advice, and build meaningful connections.
Sharing survivor stories
Telling stories about breast cancer survivors serves as a source of inspiration and hope for those who are fighting the disease. These stories offer reassurance and strength to individuals navigating their own cancer journey.
Contributing to the cause
Many organizations provide essential services for breast cancer patients, from counseling to financial assistance. Qatar Cancer Society does fundraising to support individuals living with cancer. Volunteering your time or donating to such an organization can make a significant difference to someone's life.
This October, let us stand united under the theme “no-one should face breast cancer alone” and commit to support all those affected by this disease. For individuals battling breast cancer, isolation is one of the most difficult feelings to face. However, by coming together as a community, we can ensure that no one goes through this journey alone.
