Movember: Focusing on Men's Health
Authors: Dr. Pooja Sajish V, Dr. Sohaila Cheema, Dr. Karima Chaabna
Movember is an annual global campaign conducted to raise awareness about men’s health issues. You may notice men growing their moustaches as a visible sign of support, but Movember is much more than facial hair—it is a call to action for empowering men to take charge of their physical and mental health. Movember encourages breaking down the barriers that prevent men from prioritizing their health. Together, we can inspire men to focus on their physical and mental well-being and take proactive steps towards living healthier, longer lives.
Prostate cancer: What every man should know
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men globally and in Qatar.
- Who is at risk? Men over 50, those of African descent, individuals with a family history of prostate cancer, or those with certain genetic conditions are at higher risk. Other risk factors include smoking, obesity, or certain infections.
- Why does screening matter? Symptoms might not always be noticeable at early stages. Regular screening with digital rectal examination and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests can help detect the disease early.
- What can men do for prevention? Preventive measures include quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active for at least 30 minutes on most days, and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, while limiting red meat. Men can also talk to their doctors about when to start regular prostate cancer screening. For more details or to learn about available health services in Qatar, visit your nearest PHCC clinic.
Move more: The benefits of physical activity for men’s health
Regular physical activity is one of the most powerful tools for improving both physical and mental health. It not only helps maintain a healthy weight and prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, but it also boosts mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It is never too late to start moving!
- Plan for daily movement: Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day—whether it is walking, running, swimming, or playing sports.
- Include strength training: Incorporate strength training to build muscle and support bone health.
- Break the sedentary routine: Take short breaks from sitting throughout the day by standing, stretching, or going for a walk.
For guidance on staying active, refer to the Qatar National Physical Activity Guidelines, which provide details on exercise locations like parks, cycling tracks, sports clubs, and beaches, as well as recommended activity levels for all age groups.
Mental health: It is time to talk
Men’s mental health is just as important as their physical health. However, fearing judgment or appearing weak, men often avoid discussing issues like depression. This reluctance can make it difficult for loved ones or healthcare professionals to recognize when something is wrong. Depression in men may not always manifest as sadness; it can show up as irritability, anger, or aggression. This makes it even more important to talk openly about mental health and encourage men to seek help when needed.
- Breaking the silence: It is crucial to check in on the men in our lives—ask how they are feeling, especially after life events that could trigger depression. Be aware of changes in their behavior and offer your support by listening without judgment.
- Seeking help: Encourage men to seek professional help. In Qatar, to access the mental health helpline, dial 16000. Select the language and press 4 for mental health.
Take away message
This Movember and beyond, let us encourage the men in our lives to take their health seriously. Whether it is through screening for early detection of prostate cancer, staying physically active, or opening up about mental health, adopting a proactive approach can make a world of difference. It is time to prioritize men's health—not just for ourselves, but for our families and communities.
