Positive Psychology

Draw on the positives
Draw on the positives

Qatar continues to be in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are several factors contributing to the psychological impact of the lockdown. Some stressors include isolation, prolonged quarantine duration, the risk of infection, fear of becoming sick, or losing loved ones, stigma, boredom, frustration, misinformation, as well as the prospect of financial hardship.

Remember: You are not alone!

We can take steps to mitigate some of the harmful effects of these stressors. One way of coping with the new normal is to search for the positives. Drawing on positive psychology doesn’t mean ignoring what’s going on in the world or forgetting the worries that we are experiencing. The greatest potential benefit of positive psychology is that it teaches us the power of shifting one’s perspective. A simplistic action of injecting more optimism and gratitude into our life can give us a radically more positive outlook on life. It’s a way for us to flourish during these challenging times.

Here are some tips we can all actively practice:

#Show Gratitude
Practicing gratitude helps us find meaning and purpose in view of the change to our routines and restriction of movement during the lockdown. Use the following prompts:
  • What am I grateful for?
  • What made me smile today?
  • What was something unexpectedly good today?
  • What was the highlight of my day?
  • What made me laugh today?
#Be Self-Compassionate
Research points to self-compassion being closely related to resilience and the ability to regulate our own emotions. How can you show self-compassion?
  • Shift your thinking and approach looking after yourself the way you would treat a good friend
  • Be kind to yourself
#Have Fun
Add an element of fun and enjoyment in routine tasks:
  • Create and share happy memories with family and friends
  • Exercise is a great way to boost your mood in a positive direction
  • Get intrigued! Try a new series, podcast, or book, or learn a new skill
  • Engage in self-care. Do things that make you feel good
  • Laugh
#Build on your Strengths
Focus on your strengths! Building your strengths will boost wellbeing

#Maintain Connectivity
Connect virtually with colleagues, family and friends. The power of positive relationships and virtual social connections cannot be overstated at a time when physical distancing has become the norm.
