Qatar Petroleum: Occupational Health & Wellness Forum 2019

Dr. Ravinder Mamtani, vice-dean for student affairs-admissions, population health, and lifestyle medicine, professor of healthcare policy and research, and professor of medicine at WCM-Q participated at the Qatar Petroleum - Occupational Health & Wellness Forum 2019 on November 23, 2019, where he spoke about 'Lifestyle Medicine and Its Promise in the Workplace'. By supporting lifestyle medicine, businesses and organizations are able to improve the health and safety culture within the workplace and help reduce the incidence of chronic conditions. This way the industry can further its goals of promoting the health and productivity of workers.

6th International Conference by Doha Chapter of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India

Mamtani ICAIDr. Ravinder Mamtani, vice-dean for student affairs-admissions, population health, and lifestyle medicine, professor of healthcare policy and research, and professor of medicine addressed an audience of nearly 300, comprising dignitaries and their guests, chapter members, senior finance professionals, sponsors' representatives and students at the 6th International Conference of the Doha Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India on November 15, 2019. Dr. Mamtani spoke on Lifestyle Medicine: An Inspirational Trend for Optimum Health.


Wellness Enhancement

IPH hosted a six-day, two-part immersion course that explored ways to enhance self-care, personal health and wellness. IPH invited The Wellness Enhancement Learning Course (TheWEL), a health and wellness organization based in Glasgow, Scotland, to Doha to help participants manage stress, nurture their own happiness and wellbeing, practice self-compassion, and promote good physical health. Designed and delivered by Dr. David Reilly, an internationally recognized physician, academic and teacher, the course helps participants to understand and overcome the personal challenges they face in their day-to-day lives, helping them to cope more effectively and then flourish. The course takes a holistic view of wellness and also aims to empower people to make healthy lifestyle choices in terms of food, exercise and sleep, manage their social relationships, and  find peace of mind through meditation and mindfulness practices.

Physical Activity Promotion at Teach for Qatar Summer Camp

IPH conducted four sessions on nutrition and physical activity in July 2015 at the Teach for Qatar Camp hosted at Awsaj Academy. Dr. Hekmat Alrouh delivered the sessions in Arabic. Dr. Amit Abraham, Ms. Sura A-Samraye and Ms. Raji Anand also participated in the activity. Over 100 boys aged 11 to 15 years from various independent schools in Qatar attended. The nutrition session covered learning how to read and examine nutrition labels on packaged foods using simple and easy to remember concepts. The physical activity session focused on the relationship between exercise and heart health, as well as general tips for exercising in a safe and appropriate manner. IPH received wonderful feedback from the organizers and camp facilitators. Students enjoyed the activities with a lot of engagement from both students and their facilitators.


Cancer Awareness at Debakey High School

Dr. Sohaila Cheema conducted cancer awareness sessions for high school students at Debakey High School for Health Professions, Qatar in October 2015. In total, 360 students from Grades 7 – 12 attended these sessions. Dr. Cheema discussed common types of cancer, the risk factors and the guidelines for prevention. Students were well informed and had very interesting questions and observations in the Q&A session.


Diabetes Awareness: Collaboration with the Academic Health System (AHS), Hamad Medical Corporation

A ‘Diabetes Education Awareness Program in Qatar Schools’, funded by AHS and Hamad Medical Corporation and designed and directed by Dr. Ravinder Mamtani, senior associate dean for population health, capacity building and student affairs and Dr. Sohaila Cheema, director, Institute for Population Health was conducted in nine Qatar schools in 2014.

Dr. Ravinder Mamtani led the campaign and the IPH team, comprising of Dr. Sohaila Cheema, projects specialist Dr. Hekmat Alrouh, and administration manager Raji Anand conducted the awareness sessions. At each school, a presentation was given to students about how they could reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes by eating a healthy and nutritious diet and engaging in regular exercise. This was followed by an interactive question and answer session. This pilot project was targeted at high school students (Grades 9 to 12) and approximately 1,000 students benefited from the awareness campaign.


Eyesight and eye care at ACS International School

IPH’s Dr. Hekmat Alrouh, Projects Specialist and Ms. Raji Anand, Administration Manager participated in an educational activity at ACS International School, Doha for the World Sight Day on October 12, 2016 targeted at approximately 150 middle and high school students. Dr. Alrouh presented on the importance of eyesight, the global epidemiology of eye disease, and tips for protecting and maintaining eye health.
