Description
|
This is a two-week elective course designed to provide medical students a basic understanding of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the disease it causes, and the implications of the pandemic it has caused on a global scale. This elective will be primarily conducted via guided seminar or journal club sessions, with the aim to prepare students for clinical practice in the event they are called upon to volunteer or see Covid-19 in residency, as well as prime them on information relevant to educating the general public on COVID19.
Course objectives: By the end of this two-week online course, the students will have achieved the following:
- Understand the epidemiology, biology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation and disease course of SARS-Cov- 2/COVID19.
- Develop a basic understanding of complications of COVID19, including pulmonary, cardiac, hematologic, and neurologic complications.
- Understand the testing and diagnostic approaches for COVID19.
- Discuss the current drugs treatment approach for COVID19.
- Practice principles of critical appraisal of literature of case reports, drug trials and similar literature regarding COVID19.
- Understand and discuss the development of the pandemic and the approach to management of a pandemic, including ethical and psychological considerations for healthcare workers during the pandemic.
- Understand the global health implications of the COVID19 pandemic and its consequences on the healthcare landscape post-pandemic.
Assessment: Assessment in this course will be based on student participation and performance in group discussion sessions, one quiz exam on the required reading assignments, followed by a final report submitted online in which students will critically evaluate journal articles on topics that were not discussed during the course.
Total number of learning hours: 36 hours:
- 8 hours of distance learning seminars via zoom conference call - 8 hours of reading the selected articles - 12 hours of required reading - 8 hours of self-directed learning.
