Description

Clerks will attend daily Outpatients, and Athletic Screening clinics, including Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation and Occupational therapy sessions. Opportunities may be extended to include OR experience as an Observer when appropriate. All multiple disciplinary meetings should be attended. Tutorials will be given, with sports medicine topics of interest e.g. drugs in sports, and cardiac screening for athletes. Students will be required to complete an elective report (Guidelines for this will be provided to the students).

Objectives:

  • To identify the range of sports injuries
  • To assess the prioritized needs of the injured athletic patient
  • To study methods of treatment and rehabilitation of soft tissue injuries and neurological compromise
  • To become fully competent in examining the musculoskeletal system
  • To learn surface anatomy in relation to joints, tendons, spinal areas and limbs
  • To understand the physiology of muscle function and movement
  • To become familiar with joint injections, doses of therapy, and follow up progress
  • To learn about physiotherapy and understand the regimes of treatment
  • To understand the rationale of surgical intervention
  • To learn about the best use of radiology in sports medicine

Students will be evaluated based on their attendance and participation as a team member, as well as their knowledge and understanding of Sports Medicine. Students will also be required to complete an elective report (Guidelines for this will be provided to the students).
