Description

We will be able to offer 2 X 4 weeks or 4 X 2 weeks electives as indicated (more could be negotiated depending on uptake and feedback from Women’s Mental Health Team)

 Course Objectives

1.     Opportunity for the students to have an in-depth exposure to Perinatal Psychiatry which will include opportunity to sit in clinic with psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, join clinicians in triage and consultation liaison and also clerk and discuss patients under supervision. The student will also have the opportunity to present an interesting case to the team and learn from the feedback.

2.     We hope that the student will be able to understand the differences in presentation and treatment of the common mental illness encountered in the perinatal period including considerations regarding fetal development and breast feeding.

3.     In addition to the above, a student that takes up the opportunity of the 4 weeks elective will be able to work on an audit topic as it relates to perinatal psychiatry care and he or she will be guided on how this can be presented in local or international conferences as a poster.

Final evaluation will be based on: The student’s attendance, punctuality, professionalism, communication skills, participation, enthusiasm and feedback from members of the team.
