Description

Students will have an opportunity to be exposed to and actively involved in all clinical aspects of the nephrology program. Physiological principles and approach to fluids and electrolytes will be stressed. In-patients (usually 4-6 patients) include all aspects of renal disease including acute and chronic renal failure, peritoneal and hemodialysis, urology and transplantation as well as renal biopsies. There will be active involvement in four clinics per week including transplant follow-up and dialysis. Participation in all conferences will be expected; these include renal biopsy conference, nephron-uro-radiology and dialysis conferences.

Learning Objectives from Pediatric Nephrology Elective: At the end of this elective students will be able to: 

  1. Obtain a complete and reliable pediatric nephrologic history.
  2. Organize and deliver a clear, concise, and thorough oral presentation of a patient's history and examination
  3. Formulate a diagnostic plan for common pediatric nephrologic disorders
  4. List main causes of nephrotic and nephritic syndromes in pediatrics
  5. Explain the pathophysiology of main electrolyte disorders in pediatrics
  6. List main causes of hypertension in pediatrics.  

Students will be evaluated based on their attendance and participation as a team member, as well as their knowledge and understanding of general pediatrics in general and pediatric nephrology in particular.
