Description

Description:
Students will participate in activities of the Gastroenterology (GI), Hepatology and Nutrition Service under the direct supervision of Gastroenterology attendings. The GI Service sees a broad diversity of GI-related clinical problems. Students will participate in the evaluation of clinical problems and decisions about management and are offered the opportunity to observe various procedures including endoscopy under the supervision of the Attending.

Learning Objectives:

  • Elicit appropriate history and physical exam related to GI complaint.
  • Formulate diagnostic and therapeutic plan for patients whose problems include a broad spectrum of GI diseases.
  • Interpret patient data including, history and physical exam findings, and laboratory and radiology results.
  • List the differential diagnoses and potential complications of common GI problems.
  • Exposure to common gastrointestinal pathology pertaining to pediatric age group.
  • Differentiate between common GI problems and emergencies.
  • Exposure to issues related to growth and development of infant and child as they relate to nutritional factors.
  • Learn the indications, usefulness, and limitations of different diagnostic methods/procedures.
  • Observe some of the common GI procedures, e.g., endoscopy.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary approach to GI cases.

Methodology:
Students are expected to:

  • Participate in the consultation process.
  • Follow up GI patients in the in-patient settings.
  • Attend GI clinics.
  • Attend GI procedures including endoscopy.
  • Participate in all GI didactics as journal club, clinical conferences, pathology, research, radiology seminars, and multidisciplinary conferences.

Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on the following:

  • Professional characteristics (appropriate attire, demeanor on rounds, with colleagues, patients, and parents)
  • Clinical skills (fund of knowledge appropriate to level of training, history taking, physical examination, organized presentations, identification of active clinical problems, use of the laboratory; imaging services, development of a clinical plan)
  • Communication (communication with medical staff and patient’s family)
