This elective will offer students the opportunity to observe the work-up and management of children with cardiac problems. Students will attend rounds, consultations and clinics with pediatric cardiologists and have the opportunity to observe cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Students will be expected to do histories and physical examinations on patients and formulate diagnostic impressions and therapeutic plans, appropriate to their training level. The goal of this elective is to provide exposure to pediatric cardiology. Special emphasis will be placed on physical examination of the cardiovascular system and the selection and interpretation of appropriate diagnostic studies. Students will be evaluated on the following: 1) Professional characteristics (appropriate attire, demeanor on rounds, with colleagues, with parents), and 2) Clinical skills (fund of knowledge appropriate to level of training, history taking, physical examination, identification of active clinical problems, use of the laboratory and imaging services, and development of a clinical plan).
Objectives:
1. Recognize a broad array of cardiac conditions that affect children
2. Demonstrate accurate and detailed pediatric cardiovascular physical examination
3. Discuss the differential diagnosis and management of common pediatric cardiac conditions
4. Discuss the management of heart failure and cardiac emergencies
