Description
  • Describe general concepts in immunology that explain autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions; Identify patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), describe workup, and be able to make a treatment plan.
  • Gain better understanding of role of general pediatricians in the recognition, diagnosis & management of rheumatic disease.
  • Develop an understanding of familial predisposition in some rheumatic disease, and learn to take a focused family history.
  • Develop skills necessary to identify key findings in the history suggestive of rheumatic disease, including characteristic patterns of joint pain, fevers, and systemic symptoms.
  • Hone physical exam skills, with a focus on the musculoskeletal exam.
  • Understand how to differentiate inflammatory arthritis from other causes of arthritis in childhood, including Lyme, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis with effusion, and malignancy.
  • Identify conditions that may require urgent inpatient rheumatology consult (macrophage activation syndrome, vasculitis, lupus) vs those that are typically managed outpatient (JIA).
  • Understand which rheumatic diseases are commonly managed by general pediatricians (Kawasaki disease, Henoch-Schonlein purpura).
  • Understand the role of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and ophthalmology for patients with rheumatic disease.
  • Explain the initial approach to the evaluation of the following signs and symptoms: joint pain, joint swelling, limp, muscle pain, weakness, periodic fevers, persistent fevers, rash, and Raynaud's phenomenon.
  • Discuss evaluation and treatment of the following conditions: juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, inflammatory bowel disease related arthropathy, reactive arthritis, Lyme arthritis, strep-related arthritis, common vasculitides of childhood (HSP, KD), autoimmune encephalitis, benign hypermobility, amplified pain syndromes, growing pains.
  • Understand indications and basic interpretation of the following tests: basic lab work, inflammatory markers, autoantibodies, and targeted gene sequencing.
  • Understand indications and basic interpretation of XR, ultrasound, MRI, and PET scan for the evaluation of rheumatic disease.
  • Become familiar with internet and text resources that can aid in diagnosis and management of rheumatic disease.
  • Understand general principles of treatment and mechanism of commonly used medications.

Students will be present Sun-Thurs 8-3 pm and expected to primarily to follow outpatient clinics, some inpatients and participate in didactics.

Students will be evaluated on their punctuality, attendance, professionality, interaction with the patients, pertinent history taking, physical examination skills, knowledge and interpretation of data. Students will be expected to make a presentation about a pediatric rheumatology subject of interest.
