Description

The goal of Pediatric Neurology Elective is for the student to gain a broad exposure to common neurologic conditions that affect children and adolescents and learn about their management in an inpatient and outpatient settings.

Objectives:

  1. Describe a broad array of neurologic conditions that affect children and adolescents,
  2. Recommend management of common pediatric neurologic conditions,
  3. Outline the management of neurological emergencies, and
  4. Illustrate proper pediatric CNS physical examination.

During inpatient allocation, students will be expected to take responsibility for following pediatric patients admitted to the pediatric neurology service and/or consults. They will be required to pre-round on their patients, present their patients on morning rounds and be involved in the day to day management of their patients, in conjunction with the supervising resident / fellow and attending. These patients may sometimes be located in the PICU, NICU or the Haematology/Oncology ward. During participation in the outpatient setting the students will be required to attend 2 to 3 consultant-lead clinics per week. The pediatric neurology clinics will provide students with opportunity to review a variety of pathologies, including but not limited to, epilepsies, neuromuscular and movement disorders, tone disorders, developmental delay, neurometabolic diseases and other disorders. Students are expected to participate actively in discussion and evaluation of these patients. All students will be required to attend and participate in the unit’s academic activities. Feedback will be ongoing throughout the rotation as time permits beside an official evaluation at end of the elective period given by the supervising consultant/attending.

The evaluation will be based on:

  1. Academic and clinical performance, and personal quality reviewed by the attendings and fellows who work with student and,
  2. Student’s presentations.
