Description of Elective:

The Pediatric Emergency Department at Sidra Medicine, is the main pediatric emergency department in Qatar for child medical and trauma patients. The Pediatric Emergency department at Sidra Medicine provides dedicated 24/7, international quality care for patients under the age of 18 years. The Pediatric Emergency Department sees about 90,000 patients per year, including both Medical and Trauma cases.

The Emergency Department at Sidra Medicine, allows an exposure to a very wide range of medical presentations including, acute to non-urgent, medical and trauma cases in infants and children from 0 to 18 years of age, and for major trauma cases, ages of 0- 14 years of age. This elective is an immersive experience, with the expectation of medical students to actively participate in the assessment, management and review of children presenting in the ED.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Elective Objectives:

This elective offers you an opportunity to learn how to manage common pediatric problems, observe clinical procedures, clinical documentation and how to manage common pediatric emergency problems. You also have the opportunity to attend the in-house teaching program.

As this program is not strictly structured, it is advisable to be as proactive as possible.

Student involvement and participation includes:

Students are permitted to undertake procedures under supervision, once deemed appropriate by the supervising PEM clinician

Perform history and physical exams on assigned children presenting in Minor Emergencies, Urgent Care- Fast Track, and both treatment areas

Develop differential diagnoses and preliminary management plans for patients with supervising physicians

Discuss the common medical, surgical and traumatic presentations, and the evidence-based evaluation and management of such cases

Attend and participate in the academic teaching day every Tuesday

Observe, and where appropriate, assist in minor procedures performed in the department

Observe where appropriate the resuscitative care of children presenting in the ED in extremis

Teaching Schedule:

Available elective placement dates 2023- see above.

Please note that placement start dates are fixed and cannot be modified

Accepted students are required to attend an in-person session 2-4 days before the start date.

Evaluation:

Evaluations for the elective are completed by the sponsor or medical staff as an electronic document.
