Description
|
In this elective, students will evaluate and manage pediatric patients with all types of emergencies, except major trauma, under close supervision by pediatric emergency medicine attending. They will take responsibility for care of patients appropriate to their training, participate in a curriculum designed to enhance their knowledge and skills, encouraged to reflect on attitudes related to professionalism and humanistic practices, get exposed to ethical and culturally sensitive issues related to patient care in a emergency room setting. They will also be involved with social services and community follow up of emergency room patients. Evaluation and feedback at the end of rotation by the supervising attending using the electives’ evaluation form.
Objectives:
Communicate effectively and elicit relevant history from parents and patients throughout their ER stay Perform focused relevant and appropriate physical examination on ER patients Differentiate between sick and critically ill patients Appreciate the importance of ABCs management and participate as seen appropriate Interpret patient data including, history, physical exam findings, laboratory and radiology results List differential diagnoses and potential complications of common problems Describe management of common pediatric problems in ER Describe issues related to ethics and cultural sensitivity in ER setting Attend and present in rounds in the observation/ short stay floor in ER Participate, as seen appropriate and with close supervision, in common procedures in ER e.g. phlebotomy, IV lines, Lumber puncture (LP), central lines, resuscitation etc.
