- Gain experience in the management of the full spectrum of neonatal problems – healthy newborns as well as critically ill neonates and be able to apply knowledge of maternal and fetal pathophysiology
- Witness deliveries and resuscitations of newborn infants with the respective NICU teams and gain insight in the importance of multidisciplinary team working
- Observe neonatal procedures, understand safe practice and the importance of aseptic technique
- Comprehend neonatal safeguarding and family centered care as well as ethical considerations and culturally sensitive issues within the NICU setting
- Understand the incidence and prevalence of conditions affecting the neonate in order to provide effective counseling
- Become familiar with the support available to families and other team members at the end of a baby's life
- Appreciate the importance of follow up for high risk neonates
Final evaluation will be based on WCM-Q’s ‘Assessment of Student’s Performance on Elective’.
