Description

This elective will provide an immersive experience into tertiary and quaternary neonatal care at Sidra Medicine.  Students will:

  1. Gain experience in the management of the full spectrum of neonatal problems – healthy newborns as well as critically ill neonates and be able to apply knowledge of maternal and fetal pathophysiology
  2. Witness deliveries and resuscitations of newborn infants with the respective NICU teams and gain insight in the importance of multidisciplinary team working
  3. Observe neonatal procedures, understand safe practice and the importance of aseptic technique
  4. Comprehend neonatal safeguarding and family centered care as well as ethical considerations and culturally sensitive issues within the NICU setting
  5. Understand the incidence and prevalence of conditions affecting the neonate in order to provide effective counseling
  6. Become familiar with the support available to families and other team members at the end of a baby's life
  7. Appreciate the importance of follow up for high risk neonates

Final evaluation will be based on WCM-Q’s ‘Assessment of Student’s Performance on Elective’.
