Description
  • This course is a 2-week rotation offered to Fourth Year medical students (1 student/rotation) who may be considering a surgical specialty and/or have particular interest in the science and art of pediatric urology.
  • During the rotation, the student is encouraged to integrate fully in the team and attend the in-patient rounds and weekly didactic activities (Uro-Nephro-Radiology Rounds (once weekly) and Thursday Urology Rounds (onceweekly).
  • The student will shadow Dr Yaser El Hout in his outpatient clinic with wide exposure to all problems encountered in pediatric urology (3x 5-hour sessions/week). Interactive discussion about cases will happen.
  • The student will scrub and/or observe surgical cases with Dr Yaser El Hout on his operative day (on Thursdays, i.e. .2 times per rotation). The student may join other attendings on other days if an index case is not to be missed.
  • Hands-on intraoperative teaching includes: proper scrubbing and wearing of surgical gown, suturing techniques, knot tying, insertion of urethral catheter.
  • Dr Yaser El Hout will give 2 didactic lectures to student: (Physical examination of pediatric genitalia, Urinary tract infections in children).
  • The student is encouraged to prepare a 15-minute talk about a topic in pediatric urology and present to the group towards the end of rotation.
  • Research opportunities are available and students can continue working on their projects after rotation ends.
  • The student will be exempted from course activities if conflict arises with WCM-Q curricular activities. Necessary arrangements will be made at the beginning of the course to ensure optimal exposure and benefit.
