Description

The growth of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widespread worldwide. While many health care professionals support their use, there are others who remain quite skeptical about their efficacy and usefulness. Using traditional methods of teaching such as lectures and small group discussions/ collaborations, and demonstrations when feasible, this four-week course explores and examines the widely applied forms of alternative therapies (traditional therapies of various cultures). The course approaches the subject in a scientific way while preserving the founding theories of different disciplines. Issues surrounding benefits, limitations and risks of therapies such as nutrition and herbal supplements, mind body medicine (examples: relaxation techniques), acupuncture and personal practices such as fasting and vegetarianism are discussed. Additionally, various issues concerning integrative approach to patient and disease management and government regulations are summarized. Course requirements include class participation and a written research paper.
