Description of Elective: (Please include course objectives and the criteria upon which final evaluation will be based.).
The elective in dermatology consists of:
1) Introduction to dermatology by giving information about: Anatomy of skin/ Physiologic function of skin/ Immunologic function of skin/ Explain the dermatologic language to cover, describe and demonstrate skin lesions/ History taking, examination and diagnosing skin diseases/Bed side diagnostic aids (Smears for fungi, Scrapings for parasite, Tzank smear, Skin biopsy, Wood’s light, Patch testing).
2) Teaching: Recommend an introductory book to read/ Give lectures on specific subjects that will cover some bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic diseases, atopy, some common specific diseases as acne, psoriasis, skin and systemic disorders/Staff conference, case presentations and journal club
3) Clinical activities as outpatient and inpatients
4) Be acquainted with special treatment, procedures or facilities as : phototherapy/ chemical cautery/ cryotherapy/ electrical treatment/ laser therapy/ intralesional Therapy/ minor surgical therapies
5) The elective course in dermatology goals are:
ability to diagnose common skin conditions/ to understand the importance of the relation between skin and systemic disorders/ stress on the immunologic role of skin/ beware of drugs side effects and interactions/ team work and good human relations
6) Medical Student is evaluated according to: Punctuality that covers regular attendance and response to request or order/ Attitudes and behavior/ Medical and Surgical background/ Response and appreciation of dermatology teaching/ Bedside care and follow-up/ oral questions covering material taught daily during teaching.
7) Full attendance is required
8) This elective is offered for 4 weeks if student plans for residency in General Medicine or Dermatology. Otherwise, it will be offered for 2 weeks.
