Description

The main learning objectives would be:

·   The student to work on effective interviewing skills including avoidance of stigmatization and awareness of cultural (expats, local Qataris and others from GCC) differences and health disparities.

·   To be able to conduct basic psychiatric interview of a patient including; history of the present illness, past psychiatric history, general medical history, review of systems, developmental history, substance abuse history, family history, social history

·   To have the knowledge and skill to recognize physical signs and symptoms that accompany classic psychiatric disorders (e.g., tachycardia and hyperventilation in panic disorder), psychiatric manifestations of medical illness; recognize the possible physical effects of psychotropic drugs (e.g. metabolic syndrome associated with antipsychotics)

·   Ability to display a good understanding of mental status examination and be able to present pertinent findings, including general appearance and behavior, motor activity, speech, affect, mood, thought processes, thought content, perception, sensorium and cognition, abstraction, intellect, judgment, and insight with special attention static and dynamic risk assessment.

·   Discussion on differential diagnosis and effective management and treatment plan appropriate for their level of training.

·   There are regular educational activities at Sidra like the monthly Grand Rounds (First Monday of every month from 11 AM till 12 PM). Local and international speakers present interesting educational content based on authentic research and the sessions are mostly very interactive and informative.

·   Opportunity to attend Case Conferences. (Every other week Tuesdays) Opportunity to present any interesting educational encounter /experience in Case Conferences. (Subject to availability of a slot)

·   Those students who can stay for four weeks, may participate in some of our projects like audits, surveys. E.g. On Stigma or a clinical topic. It would be a good learning experience if the students can prepare a questionnaire for the proposed survey with support and supervision from the CAMHS faculty. Towards the end of their placement, they will be encouraged to do a joint presentation on the survey work to our department. They may utilize this opportunity and also develop posters.

·   The students may join our team members who are already working on some research projects, but this needs to be discussed with the team first.

There will be opportunities for other educational activities that will arise from time to time and we can accommodate them accordingly.
