Description
|
This course introduces students to the anatomy required to perform common clinical procedures. Instruction will involve a combination of standardized patients for demonstration of surface anatomical landmarks and cadavers for the practice of invasive procedures. It will be most useful to students intending to specialize in more procedural fields, such as surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesia, and interventional radiology.
Course Objectives:
1. Demonstrate the anatomical structures encountered during common clinical procedures.
2. Assess the indications and complications of common clinical procedures by doing at least 1 platform presentation.
3. Analyze a review or research paper on each procedure.
Evaluation criteria:
- Medical Knowledge: Students are expected to demonstrate on standardized patients and cadavers anatomical and clinical knowledge of basic clinical procedures such as cricothyroidtomy, endotracheal intubation, peripheral IV access, intraossesous access, thoracocentesis, and lumbar puncture.
- Practice-Based Learning and Improvement: Students are expected to investigate and evaluate their patient care practices by appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence.
- Systems-Based Practice: Students are expected to demonstrate an awareness of the larger context and system of health care and effectively call on system resources to provide optimal care.
- Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Students are expected to effectively communicate and teamwork.
