Emergency Medicine

Elentra eLearning

Welcome to the Emergency Medicine Clerkship! Here you will gain invaluable experience by taking care of the undifferentiated patient (e.g. headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal pain) and the acutely sick patient (e.g. trauma, sepsis, myocardial infarction, stroke, overdose, cardiac arrest).  You will learn to take a focused history to develop a differential diagnosis and then quickly make decisions on diagnostic workup, treatment, and disposition. You will also learn a number of procedural skills (e.g. IV placement, ABG, paracentesis, wound closure, abscess drainage, CPR, defibrillation, cardioversion, and point of care ultrasound amongst others). To enhance your experience, you will be exposed to the entire spectrum of emergency care. You will do shifts in the ambulance receiving area, resuscitation bay, male & female urgent care sections, and HMGH.

As an integral part of this clerkship, you will engage in direct patient interaction under the guidance and supervision of the team. Their valuable feedback will help you hone your history-taking, physical exam, and procedural skills. To ensure a seamless integration into the clinical setting, we will provide you with a comprehensive 3-day immersive “boot camp” prior to your clinical shifts allowing you to explore and experience both the theoretical and practical aspects of emergency medicine. This will include self-directed and faculty-led training, workshops, and simulations. We are excited to have you join us!
