Description

This course is intended to introduce Radiation Oncology to 3rd and 4th year medical students.

The objectives of the Elective will be to provide an overview about radiation oncology practice. The course will provide  didactic lectures as well as clinical observership.

Didactic lectures on:

  • Indications and cancer sites amenable to Radiation Therapy
  • Basic principles of radiobiology and radiation physics

Clinical observership will cover:

  • Clinic posting for new patient consultations and follow up visits
  • Radiation Oncology techniques, technology and technical skills from different team members of Radiation Oncology, namely Oncologists, Medical Physicists and Radiation Therapists
  • Patient journey, including simulation, planning and treatment

In addition, the students will attend multi-disciplinary team meetings and different department meetings where patient clinical details and treatment will be discussed and decided upon.

On successful completion of the course student will get an overview about principles and practice of radiation oncology.
