Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship

Elentra eLearning

The obstetrics and gynecology clerkship is a required 6-week clinical rotation. During their 3rd or 4th year, medical students will rotate through service sites at Women’s Wellness and Research Center, Al Wakra Hospital and Sidra Medicine where they will be exposed to the outpatient, inpatient and emergent management of obstetrics and gynecology patients. Students learn how to provide routine antenatal care, preventative gynecologic care and the management of common obstetric and gynecologic emergencies.

The students join their assigned clinical team to round on the inpatients, observe surgical cases, assist in managing laboring patients and evaluate patients presenting to the emergency department and outpatient clinics. This clinical experience exposes the students to nearly every aspect of obstetrics and gynecology. All clinical activities are performed under the supervision of residents and faculty.

The curriculum also involves didactic sessions, case presentations and simulations workshops. The workshops are designed to teach and practice skills such as history-taking, breast and pelvic examinations, as well as the normal vaginal delivery. The student assessment is based on the overall clinical evaluation, the formal learning sessions, a learning portfolio, and a standardized written examination (the NBME). The final grade is fail, pass, high pass or honors.
