WCM-Q professor named recipient of R. Benton Adkins, Jr. Distinguished Service Award

Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar’s (WCM-Q) Dr. Ameed Raoof, associate professor of anatomy in radiology, has been nominated and chosen as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA) R. Benton Adkins, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. The award will be presented to Dr. Raoof in June in New York.

Initiated in 2003 by the AACA’s Executive Council, the R. Benton Adkins Jr. Distinguished Service Award was created to honor the memory of R. Benton Adkins, Jr., M.D. One of the founding members of the AACA, Benton worked tirelessly to promote the association and its aims of advancing clinical anatomy knowledge and anatomical services through education, research, and scholarship.

The R. Benton Adkins Jr. Distinguished Service Award is only issued if there is an individual the council and/or general membership (via nomination) deems is deserving of the accolade.

Dr. Raoof joined WCM-Q’s medical division as an associate professor of anatomy in radiology in 2016, having previously served as an associate professor of anatomy at Oakland University William Beaumont (OUWB) School of Medicine in Michigan, US. Before joining OUWB, Dr. Raoof was an assistant professor of anatomy and medical education at the University of Michigan Medical School, US, where he also served as director of the Division of Anatomical Sciences, director of the Anatomical Donation Program, and director of the Plastination Lab at different points in his career.

Dr. Raoof has received several national and university teaching awards and is a member of numerous professional organizations.

Commenting on the award, Dr. Raoof said: “It is an absolute honor and privilege to be nominated and selected as the 2024 recipient of the R. Benton Adkins, Jr. Distinguished Service Award. I look forward to continuing to work towards advancing clinical anatomy through education and research, with the ultimate aim of enhancing healthcare.”

Dr. Thurayya Arayssi, vice dean for academic and curricular affairs at WCM-Q, said: “Being named as the recipient of this prestigious award is a wonderful acknowledgment of all the meaningful contributions Dr. Raoof has made and continues to make to the field of clinical anatomy. We are extremely proud that Dr. Raoof has been awarded this honor.”
