The Division of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) has launched a new series of webinars for physicians, titled ‘What Does the Non-Cardiologist Need to Know About Cardiology.’

Cardiac diseases are the most common cause of death among adults, and it is common for physicians who are not cardiologists to encounter cardiac patients in outpatient settings. The new series is designed to offer guidance to these non-cardiologist physicians to help them provide the very best care possible to the cardiac patients they treat for other health issues, which may or may not be related to cardiac disease.

Each instalment of the new series is delivered by expert interventional cardiologist Dr. Islam Elgendy, assistant professor of medicine at WCM-Q. In the first instalment, Dr. Elgendy spoke on the topic, ‘Management of Stable Coronary Artery Disease.’ In his presentation, Dr. Elgendy outlined the pathophysiology of stable coronary artery disease, explained how to identify the appropriate investigative methods for evaluating patients with the condition, and discussed the common therapies used in the management of patients with stable coronary artery disease. Treatment plans are usually personalized to the specific needs of each patient, but broadly speaking are based upon risk factor management, antianginal drugs and lifestyle modifications, such as tobacco cessation, healthy diet and weight loss, and exercise. The next instalment of the series is titled ‘Chronic Heart Failure Management.’

The webinars are accredited locally by the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Healthcare Professions – Accreditation Section and internationally by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
