WCM-Q Excellence in Teaching Awards honor outstanding faculty members

The Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) Excellence in Teaching Awards 2022 recognized the outstanding contributions of faculty members over the past academic year.

Attended by WCM-Q faculty, students, and staff, this year’s awards ceremony saw 21 awards presented in 14 categories for contributions to pre-medical and medical education, and 12 winners in four categories of the 2022 Convocation Awards.

In the Pre-medical Education section, the Foundation Year Awards were presented to Dr. Majda Sebah and Dr. Rachid Bendriss, while the 1st Year Pre-medical Education Awards were won by Dr. Dalia Zakaria and Dr. Kuei-Chiu Chen. The 2nd Year Pre-medical Education Awards went to Dr. Dalia Zakaria and Dr. Moncef Ladjimi, and the English Writing Award went to Dr. Krystyna Golkowska. Ms. Padmakumari Sarada and Dr. Ihor Kulai won the Teaching Specialist Awards, with an honorable mention for Mr. Matthew Carey.

In the Medical Education section, the Excellence in Teaching in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum Award was presented to Dr. Mange Manyama.

The Excellence in Teaching in the Clinical Curriculum Award went to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, and the Excellence in Leadership in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum Awards went to Dr. Naim Haddad and Dr. Sean Holroyd, while Dr. Al Jerdi and Dr. Mai Mahmoud won the Excellence in Leadership in the Clinical Curriculum Award.

Additionally, in the Medical Education section, the Excellence in Mentoring in the Area of Concentration Award was won by Dr. Ameed Raoof, while the Excellence in Educational Innovation Award was presented to Dr. Liam Fernyhough. This year’s awards for visiting faculty were won by Dr. Meredith Turetz and Dr. Amir Soumekh in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum category and Dr. Joseph Safdieh in the Clinical Curriculum category.

Dr. Thurayya Arayssi, Vice Dean for Academic and Curricular Affairs, said: “Every year, we come together to celebrate and honor faculty members who have made exemplary contributions to our students, our institution, and the very discipline of teaching. I sincerely thank and congratulate our award-winning faculty for going above and beyond during the past academic year.”

In the Convocation Awards section, the Senior List of WCM-Q awardees were Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, Dr. Tariq Chukir, Dr. Moune Jabre, Dr. Avelin Malyango, Dr. Mange Manyama, Dr. Ameed Raoof, and Dr. Aicha Rifai.

The Senior List of Visiting Faculty award winners were Dr. Joseph Safdieh and Dr. Linnie Golightly. The Humanism in Medicine Award went to Dr. Stella Major and Dr. Aicha Rifai, and the House Staff Teaching Award went to Dr. Fatima Al-Khawaja.                   

Three of this year’s winners are WCM-Q alumni: Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, Dr. Tariq Chukir, and Dr. Fatima Al-Khawaja.

Dr. Marco Ameduri, Senior Associate Dean for Pre-medical Education and Education City Collaborative Curricular Affairs, said: “We are extremely grateful for the unwavering commitment and contributions our faculty make towards guiding and inspiring our students on a personal, academic, and professional level. A very heartfelt congratulations to this year’s winners.”

Dr. Javaid Sheikh, Dean of WCM-Q, said: “Our faculty is one of the core pillars on which WCM-Q was built and a driving force for our continued success. I would like to congratulate the outstanding faculty members who have been recognized in this year’s Excellence in Teaching Awards for their exceptional achievements and commitment to our students and WCM-Q as a whole. I would also like to extend my deepest gratitude to all our staff and faculty for their persistent dedication towards our vision of becoming an iconic organization.”
