WCM-Q celebrates outstanding medical faculty members

The Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) Excellence in Teaching Awards 2023 have recognized the contributions of outstanding educators over the past year.

The annual awards ceremony celebrates the work of all WCM-Q medical program teaching faculty while also recognizing outstanding contributions made by individual faculty members to the education of students at WCM-Q. This year saw 12 awards presented in 8 categories for contributions to medical education, plus 11 winners in four categories of the 2023 Convocation Awards, which similarly recognize excellence in teaching and commitment to the academic performance and personal development of students. 

In the Medical Education section, the Excellence in Teaching in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum Award was presented to Dr. Mange Manyama, while the Excellence in Teaching in the Clinical Curriculum Award went to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi and Dr. Mahrukh Rizvi. The Excellence in Leadership in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum Awards was awarded to Dr. Sean Holroyd, and the Excellence in Leadership in the Clinical Curriculum Award went to Dr. Al Jerdi.

Additionally, in the Medical Education section, the Excellence in Mentoring in the Area of Concentration Award was won by Dr. Charbel Abi Khalil and Dr. Mange Manyama, while the Excellence in Educational Innovation Award was presented to Dr. Moune Jabre and Dr. Sahar Mohamed. This year’s awards for visiting faculty were won by Dr. Meredith Turetz and Dr. Amir Soumekh in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum category and Dr. Joseph Safdieh in the Clinical Curriculum category.

Dr. Thurayya Arayssi, vice dean for academic and curricular affairs, said: “I offer my warmest thanks and congratulations to our medical program teaching faculty for their dedication and contributions over the past academic year. We are delighted to recognize and celebrate their achievements.”

In the Convocation Awards section, the Senior List of WCM-Q awardees were Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, Dr. Tariq Chukir, Dr. Mange Manyama, Dr. Ali Ibrahim Rahil (HMC), Dr. Ameed Raoof, Dr. Mahrukh Rizvi, and Dr. Ali Sultan.

The Senior List of Visiting Faculty award winner was Dr. Mark Pecker. The Humanism in Medicine Award went to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, and the House Staff Teaching Award went to Dr. Sherif Ashraf and Dr. Thanu Shree.

Three of this year’s winners are WCM-Q alumni: Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, Dr. Tariq Chukir, and Dr. Mahrukh Rizvi.

Dr. Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, said: “I offer my most sincere congratulations to the winners of this year’s Excellence in Teaching Awards—we are truly blessed to have such an exceptional group of educators at WCM-Q. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my profound appreciation to all our faculty for their contribution to the college and, most of all, their commitment to our studentsit is an honor to work alongside you.”
