WCM-Q celebrates medical faculty

The Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) Excellence in Teaching Awards 2024 have recognized the outstanding contributions of teaching faculty to the education of medical students over the past academic year.

This year’s awards ceremony saw 12 awards presented in 8 categories for contributions to medical education, plus 13 winners in four categories of the 2024 Convocation Awards, which similarly recognize excellence in teaching and commitment to the academic performance and personal development of students. 

In the Medical Education section, the Excellence in Teaching in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum Award was presented to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi and Dr. Mange Manyama, while the Excellence in Teaching in the Clinical Curriculum Award went to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi and Dr. Mahrukh Rizvi. The Excellence in Leadership in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum Award was awarded to Dr. Naim Haddad, and the Excellence in Leadership in the Clinical Curriculum Award went to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi.

Additionally, the Excellence in Mentoring in the Area of Concentration Award was won by Dr. Ziyad Mahfoud, while the Excellence in Educational Innovation Award was presented to Dr. Liam Fernyhough. This year’s awards for visiting faculty were won by Dr. Thangamani Muthukumar and Dr. Amir Soumekh in the Foundational Sciences Curriculum category and Dr. Jyotishman Pathak and Dr. Joseph Safdieh in the Clinical Curriculum category.

Dr. Thurayya Arayssi, vice dean for academic and curricular affairs, said: “I sincerely thank and congratulate our award-winning faculty for going above and beyond during the past academic year. It is always an honor to recognize and celebrate their achievements and contributions to our students and our institution.”

In the Convocation Awards section, the Senior List of WCM-Q awardees were Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, Dr. Tariq Chukir, Dr. Naim Haddad, Dr. Amal Khidir, Dr. Zahra Naqvi, Dr. Aicha Rifai, Dr. Mahrukh Rizvi, and Dr. Khaled Zamel.

The Senior List of Visiting Faculty award winners were Dr. Anthony Ogedegbe and Dr. Joseph Safdieh. The Humanism in Medicine Award went to Dr. Salman Al Jerdi and Dr. Amine Rakab, and the House Staff Teaching Award went to Dr. Fatima Al-Binali.

Five of this year’s winners were WCM-Q alumni: Dr. Salman Al Jerdi, Dr. Tariq Chukir, Dr. Mahrukh Rizvi, Dr. Zahra Naqvi, and Dr. Fatima Al-Binali.

Dr. Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, said: “I extend my sincere congratulations to all faculty members who have been honored at this year’s awards ceremony. Your exemplary contributions to education are indeed commendable. Furthermore, I wish to convey my profound gratitude to all faculty for their steadfast commitment to our students, institution, and vision.”
