The first week of the executive MBA specialization course titled “Driving Excellence in Healthcare” developed by Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar in conjunction with HEC Paris was delivered in New York.
Teaching faculty from Weill Cornell New York, Cornell Tech, Cornell Law, and the Cornell S.C. Johnson School of Business joined guest speakers from leading international pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Merck to deliver the first week of the executive MBA to an international group of participants hailing from Qatar, France, Switzerland, Spain, and Saudi Arabia.
The innovative executive MBA program combines the expertise of WCM-Q, the wider Cornell family of academic institutions, and HEC Paris to provide a deep understanding of the complex managerial and policy challenges faced by health systems. The one-year course, which launched in 2022 as a standalone certificate and, in 2023, became a full specialization, equips healthcare professionals with the tools, skills, and knowledge to make informed decisions and guide their organizations through the realities of today’s health systems. The part-time, modular format of the executive MBA course allows participants to remain fully employed while pursuing their business degree.
“Our participants reported that they learned a huge amount from the expert faculty and industry speakers who presented the weeklong course in New York,” said WCM-Q’s Dr. Charbel Abi Khalil, one of the driving forces behind the launch of the course. “Being able to experience direct contact with highly qualified, senior healthcare executives provides truly excellent insights into the challenges and possibilities presented by modern healthcare systems, which are becoming more complex and sophisticated year by year. Through such powerful insights, our participants are developing know-how that will enable them to drive efficiencies and improvements in their respective fields of operation, which will in turn lead to enhanced patient care.
“We are very grateful to everyone who participated to make this week such a great success,” added Dr. Abi Khalil, Assistant Dean of International Affairs, Professor of Genetic Medicine, Medicine & Population Health Sciences, and consultant cardiologist.
The participants will attend a second five-day in-person session in Doha later in the academic year.
The Driving Excellence in Healthcare specialization is aimed particularly at those involved in healthcare delivery, such as physicians, nurse executives, and healthcare administrators, as well as senior policymakers and executives from insurance, pharmaceutical, and medical device companies, all of whom benefit from gaining a systems-level understanding of the health sector. For motivated participants from other industries who might be considering a transition towards an executive career in healthcare, this program can provide a demanding yet rewarding entry point.
