WCM-Q’s Health and YOU webinars promote community wellness
The Institute for Population Health (IPH) at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) regularly organizes health education webinar sessions under the title ‘Health and YOU: Community Wellness Series’ that are open to the general public.
During the webinars, experts address common health topics and concerns facing communities around the world. The series aims to create community awareness about health and disease to enhance self-care, reduce suffering, improve the quality of life, and increase healthy longevity.
The last few installments of the webinar series explored topics such as the importance of oral health and the vital role of dentists in improving dental knowledge on a community level; common complaints related to eye health; the meaning of self-care, strategies for self-care, and how it can improve health, happiness, and overall wellbeing; and physiological age-related changes and special health issues related to the elderly population.
Other topics included the triggers that parents/caregivers need to be aware of at mealtimes and how to work around them to avoid conflicts; self-awareness and wellbeing, and identifying strategies for personal growth that foster a healthier and more fulfilling life; the latest on physical and sporting activity; and the causes, symptoms and effective management of heartburn, and insights for a healthier heartburn-free life.
Speakers included Dr. Sohaila Cheema, associate professor of clinical population health sciences and assistant dean for IPH at WCM-Q; Dr. Amine Rakab, assistant professor of clinical medicine and assistant dean for clinical learning at WCM-Q, and internal medicine consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC); Dr. Nizar Kharma, dental surgeon, Qatar; Dr. Amal Khidir, associate professor of pediatrics, medical education, WCM-Q; Ms. Maha Elnashar, director, Center for Cultural Competence in Healthcare, IPH, WCM-Q; Dr. Mohammad Samara, ophthalmologist, HMC; Dr. Mai Mahmoud, associate professor and assistant dean for faculty affairs, WCM-Q and HMC; and Dr. Mahamud Verjee, associate professor of family medicine in clinical medicine at WCM-Q.
Dr. Ravinder Mamtani, WCM-Q professor of population health sciences, vice dean for population health and lifestyle medicine, and professor of medicine at the Centre for Global Health, said: “At IPH, we believe in the paramount importance of population health at both local and global levels.
