A researcher at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) has been awarded a prestigious international fellowship in recognition of his contribution to the study of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Dr. Arfan Ahmed, assistant professor of research in population health sciences and center coordinator in the AI Center for Precision Health at WCM-Q, was made a fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI).

The academy, which is part of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), serves as an honor society that recognizes expertise in biomedical and health informatics internationally. Being awarded a fellowship by the IAHSI is regarded as one of the highest honors available to professionals working in bioinformatics and AI.

A new class of fellows is elected each year, based on a set of criteria that includes accomplishments in the field of biomedical and health informatics; work that has garnered local, regional and international recognition; and global engagement through research, publication, education or leadership. Dr. Ahmed was one of only 20 fellows from around the world elected to the 2024 Class of Academy Fellows.

Dr. Ahmed said: “I feel honored to have been elected a fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics and extremely happy that the work of the AI Center for Precision Health at WCM-Q has been accorded international recognition. I am very grateful for the support from dean Sheikh, my team and the wider WCM-Q community, and colleagues from my network. We are very excited about the incredible potential of AI applications in healthcare, which offers so many possible avenues for advancing patient care, improving healthcare outcomes, and enhancing quality of life.”

Dr. Javaid Sheikh, dean of WCM-Q, said: “Dr. Arfan Ahmed is a gifted and dedicated researcher who is making huge contributions to the work of the AI Center for Precision Health at WCM-Q and to the wider field. We are extremely happy and proud that his excellent research has been acknowledged and honored by the International Academy of Health Sciences.”
