Description

The Rheumatology elective is delivered at Hamad General Hospital under the supervision of the consultants in the section. By the end of the elective, the student is expected to be able to competently: 1. Perform the musculoskeletal examination of patients presenting to the rheumatology clinic 2. Generate a differential diagnosis in the evaluation of patients presenting with common musculoskeletal complaints 3. Interpret relevant laboratory tests 4. List the indications for arthrocentesis in general and interpret synovial fluid analysis 5. Recognize common rheumatologic syndromes and the general principles of their management.

During this elective, the student will actively participate in the rheumatology service both in the inpatient and outpatient settings and will work closely with the consultants and fellow on service during that month. The student is expected to attend daily rounds and daily outpatient clinics. In addition, the student is expected to attend and participate in the educational meetings of the section, which include journal club, case presentation, radiology-rheumatology and pathology-rheumatology sessions. The student’s contribution in the educational activities will be used, in conjunction with the clinical performance, for the final evaluation.
