Description

I. Objectives
The student will increase his/her skill in gathering an appropriate database by history and physical exam and in formulation of diagnostic and therapeutic plans for patients whose problems include a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal diseases.

II. Method
Students will see all patients admitted to the GI service including those not on Team Care. This is an opportunity for the student to see a large number of endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, the pathological processes involved and to learn the indications, usefulness and limitations of the methods. They will have the opportunity of doing the initial consultation of patients referred from other services. Cases will! then be presented to the GI attendings for their opinions. Appropriate references will be made available by regarding journal articles and basic texts. Rounds on patients will include reviewing x-rays, biopsies, scans, and other lab studies. The student will also see patients in the outpatient settings.

III. Evaluation
1. Ongoing evaluation by the supervising physician will be used to assess the student's acquisition of knowledge and application of this to patient care.
2. To obtain credit for this elective, all students must complete and return the elective evaluation form to the Department of Medicine.
