Profile

Dr. Simeon Andrews studied biochemistry, biophysics, and chemistry at Oregon State University, where he also was trained in natural products research. He studied at Portland State University for two years, obtaining his MSc in Chemistry. His research there instilled an interest in neglected and tropical diseases and drug development. Additionally, he found teaching was not a chore, but a real passion. While at the University of Washington, he first studied membrane proteins, then did his dissertation on developing new methods to study protein-protein interactions. This research included everything from organic synthesis techniques to cell culture and protein purification. He continued working as a teaching assistant. Immediately after graduation, he worked briefly as an adjunct professor at a community college.

Dr. Andrews moved to Doha in 2013 to begin postdoctoral training at WCM-Q in the lab of Dr. Joel Malek. Along with setting up the new research lab, Dr. Andrews pursued research in cutting-edge techniques of high-throughput analysis of protein-protein interaction networks. His work culminated in the initial development of the “all-vs-all” sequencing (AVA-Seq) technique. During this time, he acted as a teaching assistant for a semester in organic chemistry. Having completed his postdoctoral training, he transitioned into full-time teaching in 2017 as a teaching specialist for the medical students, pioneering this role as an educational assistant to students in their first year of medical school. Covering this wide range of subjects was intellectually stimulating, and increased his desire to focus on teaching. In 2020, he took these skills to the premedical education department of WCM-Q, where he supported biochemistry and general chemistry courses while continuing to work with first-year medical students. Since 2023, Dr. Andrews has been faculty in this same department, with a focus on chemistry and biochemistry education.
