Specialty:  Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Residency
Virginia Commonwealth University

Class of 2018 Qatari graduate, Dr. Faten Aqeel may only have been awarded her residency position in internal medicine in the past year, but her relationship with WCM-Q and the medical field began longbefore her graduation. In 2011, Aqeel was named winner of the Healing Hands Essay Writing Competition, an annual contest that aims to inspire Qatari high school students to follow a career in medicine.

As a result, she received a scholarship to travel to New York City for two weeks, and took advantage of a range of opportunities in clinical medicine and medical research at Weill Cornell Medicine. Using this experience to learn basic research methodology and shadowing physicians in their clinics. This affirmed her ambition to pursue a career in medicine.

Dr. Aqeel strongly believes in the importance of spreading awareness to encourage the community to adopt a healthy lifestyle. During her time at WCM-Q, Aqeel participated in several local and international volunteer activities and awareness campaigns organized by the college, including the annual open day, Medicine Unlimited. She also offered medical assistance and raised awareness about common medical issues in communities in Costa Rica and Tanzania.

Dr. Aqeel believes that the healthcare system in Qatar is moving in the right direction, given the fact that Qatar has achieved many medical accomplishments within a very short period of time.” As she pursues her internal medicine residency she continues to encourage prospective medical students to pursue their studies at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar.
