Founded in 1898 and affiliated with what is now NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) since 1927, Weill Cornell Medicine is one of the top-ranked clinical and medical research centers in the U.S. It is committed to excellence in research, teaching and patient care, and the advancement of the art and science of medicine.

In addition to the degree in medicine, Weill Cornell offers PhD programs in biomedical research and education at the Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences; a joint MD-MBA program with Cornell’s Johnson School of Management; and a joint MD-PhD program with Rockefeller University and Sloan-Kettering Institute.

The medical college has 20 academic departments. Seven focus on the basic sciences, and thirteen encompass the study, treatment and prevention of human diseases, as well as maternity care. Recent research breakthroughs include the world's first gene therapy for Parkinson’s disease, and identification of the bone marrow’s critical contribution to tumor growth.

Clinical faculty members hold academic appointments at the medical college and clinical appointments at one of its affiliated hospitals. Major affiliates include NYPH, ranked sixth among America's best hospitals according to U.S. News & World Report 2007, and Houston's Methodist Hospital. As a result, the medical college is part of one of the most extensive and effective health-care networks in the U.S.

Weill Cornell is working with institutions across the world from Haiti to Tanzania to Turkey in the fields of health care, education and research. In addition, approximately 40 percent of its fourth year medical students choose an international elective in the months before they graduate.
