Description

This elective in the Department of Psychiatry involves challenging patient care experience and the opportunity to work under the direct supervision of members of the consultation-liaison team. The elective is intended for students who plan to go into specialties other than Psychiatry as well as Psychiatry. Its goal is to familiarize the future physician with the emotional reactions of medically ill patients as well as determination of the nature and range of neuropsychiatric disturbances. The students will be taught how to evaluate and manage their own caseload under supervision and how to establish an effective consultative relationship with patients and hospital staff. Attention will be given various types of adaptive and maladaptive responses to physical illness and how these responses can be influenced and changed. The student will work with Psychiatric personnel assigned to liaison services in the general hospital, seeing patients, doing evaluations and overseeing treatment.
