The Research Internship for National College Students at Weill Cornell Medicine–Qatar (WCM-Q) offers ambitious young researchers, aged 18 years and above, the opportunity to spend their time learning about biomedical research in a challenging and dynamic research environment. The program which is open for Qatari nationals and long term residents, gives college students the platform to ask questions, understand and apply science.
The programs are divided into two main components:
A. Biomedical Research Management Basics
The Biomedical Research Management Basics component consists of several modules designed to give interns an introduction to biomedical research. This component aims to provide college students with the background information that will support them during the Biomedical Research Practical Training component of the program. Below is a list of the different modules included in this component:
- Research Operation
- Laboratory Management
- Grants Management
- Research Compliance
- Clinical Management
- Professional Skills
B. Biomedical Research Practical Training
The practical training gives interns an insight into a real employee’s life. Trainees are expected to apply hands-on knowledge gained during the Biomedical Research Management Basics component of the program during their practical training. This component aims to help interns experience training in an actual research environment.
The period of the practical training depends on the program the intern chooses from below:
Research Internship (4 weeks)
This 4-week internship is offered in the summer. Interns train from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Sunday through Thursday. Taught modules and practical training are offered and trainees are expected to take the lead in managing their time between each component.
In order to complete the program, trainees must complete the Biomedical Research Management Basics (taught modules) and the Biomedical Research Practical Training. At the end of this program, interns receive a certificate of completion for the Research Internship option, and a stipend.
Intensive Research Internship (8 weeks)
This 8-week internship is offered in the summer. Interns train from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Sunday through Thursday. Taught modules and practical training are offered and trainees are expected to take the lead in managing their time between each component.
