About Qatar

Geography & Climate

Geographically, Qatar is a peninsula of approximately 11,500 square kilometers (about 5,000 square miles), featuring sweeping southern sand dunes, flat rocky deserts, and fertile areas in the north. The country enjoys a desert climate: summers are hot and humid, while winters are mild and pleasant. Annual rainfall is low and mostly falls between October and March.

  • Electricity: 240V AC, 50Hz. Standard British-style 3-pin plugs are used.
  • Currency: The Qatari Riyal (QR), fixed at $1 USD = QR 3.65. Most major credit cards are accepted. Currency exchange is available at banks, airports, and exchange bureaus.                                                                                                                                                                        
  • Telephone: Qatar’s country code is +974. City or area codes are not used.                                                                                                    
  • Emergency Number: Dial 999 for police, fire, or medical emergencies.                                                                                                         
  • Languages: Arabic is the national language; English is widely spoken.
  • Tipping: A 10% tip is customary unless service charges are already included. 


Local Customs

Qatar is a welcoming country that follows Islamic traditions. Visitors are expected to respect local customs and values. Modest dress is encouraged in public places: women should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts. 

Alcohol is only permitted in licensed venues, and drug-related offenses carry strict penalties.
