Fatima Al. Musafri, MD
Fatma Al. Musafri, MD, Senior Attending Physician in Genetics and Genomic Medicine at Sidra Medicine, obtained her medical degree from King Faisal University, KSA.
Following graduation, Dr. Al Musafri completed consecutive two-year fellowships at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, the first in clinical and metabolic genetics, and the second in clinical and prenatal genetics. She also spent time working on prenatal genetics as a sub-specialty at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
In 2013, Dr. Al Musafri established a weekly prenatal genetic clinic within the Fetomaternal Medicine Unit (FMU) at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Women's Wellness and Research Center (WWRC). Dr. Al Musafri still runs the clinic, which is believed to be the first of its kind in Qatar.
Dr. Al Musafri is a member of the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Committee and of the FMU high-risk team at WWRC, and is Arab Board certified in pediatrics. She sits on the educational and exam committees of both the General Pediatrics and Clinical and Metabolic Genetic Department at HMC and is Assistant Program Director in the Clinical and Metabolic Genetic Department. She is also part of the Qatar Genetic Team research group and participates in local, regional and international research collaborations, principally in the fields of brain malformation, microcephaly, white matter disorders and autosomal recessive disorders. She is currently Co-PI in a clinical trial of treatment of superior mesenteric artery syndrome and on a web-based survey being conducted as part of the Qatar Genome Project.
As a member of the Qatar Genetic Research group, Dr. Al Musafri has been the recipient of several awards, including the Stars of Excellence Award in 2011 for pioneering screening of newborns and specialized care of genetic diseases in the Middle East region. She received a further Stars of Excellence award in 2014 for her contributions to research in the field of medical genetics
