Factors affecting the show rate for new patients in ambulatory general paediatric clinics during the FIFA world cup – Qatar 2022

Introduction: Sport mass gathering dose have a huge impact on the hosting countries in multiple aspects specially the health care sectors. In Qatar levelled up strategies aligned with the international standards for mass gathering were performed starting from organization of traffics flows, working hours rules and regulation, school vacations and health care anticipatory plans during the world cup.

Our aim is to explore the factors that affected the show rate of new-patients in general paediatric clinics during the world cup 2022.

Methods: A cross-sectional study run during the Qatar world cup 2022 (18/November- 18/December) in Hamad medical corporation pediatric out-patients department. Surveyed phone calls performed to the families who didn’t show for the first appointment in general pediatric clinics. The survey covered aspects of no-shows related to families, process and environment.

Results: Total number booked during the world cup 535, no-show 192 with similarity of194 no-show before the event, 148(77%) responded to the phone call surveys, national were 69 and non-national 79 and responders to the phone call: fathers 68, mothers 79, factors affecting no show stated per families as in the graphs below. 42 only of the families were aware about appointment rescheduling/cancellation process to call 16060 and106 didn’t know about it in which education given.

Conclusion: Our study showed that world cup mass gathering had similar impact on the show rate of new patients in general pediatric clinics in compression to the era before it’s start. The recognizable causes of now show among the surveyed families were forgetting the appointment or not knowing about it even though of pre-visits phones and messages reminders. Better understating of the factors affecting the show rate will lead to improve the utilization clinics slots and enhance the solutions to avoid the no show that will lead to improve the patients care and safety. BIOGRAPHY

 

Dr. Manasik is a General Pediatric Consultant at Hamad General Hospital (HGH), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) since 2011. She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatric at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) and Qatar university-medical college. Dr. Manasik received her medical training at Gezira University, Sudan. Her areas of practice and interest include inpatient medicine, participating in designing and conducting clinical research, teaching, and supervising residents during their residency, putting great effort in clinical and academic researchers and quality improvement projects in paediatric programs and as of that she is currently appointed as physician lead of HGH general paediatric quality improvement and patient’s safety. She has a wide variety of accepted abstracts and has presented workshops in multiple international conferences. She is an instructor of a different educational committee including communication, simulation, quality and safety.
