Unlocking the Connection: Human Development and Social-Emotional Excellence

Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar

Overview

Professionals in healthcare and education regularly face high-stakes decisions, emotional labor, and multicultural interpersonal dynamics. Without intentional development of their social-emotional and meaning-making capacities, they may experience emotional fatigue and diminished effectiveness. The training program is designed to meet this growing need. Grounded in contemporary developmental theory and evidence-based social-emotional competency (SEC) frameworks, the program aims to deepen professionals' understanding of their own growth trajectories, enhance their relational and emotional capacities, and provide them with tools for navigating complex, human-centered environments. Ultimately, this training will contribute to Qatar's broader goals by promoting a workforce that is resilient, emotionally intelligent workforce that is ethically grounded and developmentally adaptive.

This interactive 6-hour training highlights the dynamic relationship between the adult developmental stages and the SECs essential for thriving in professional and social life. This workshop guides participants through how adults make meaning of their life experiences - and how that shapes their ability to manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. Through self reflection, case studies, and group discussions, professionals will gain insight into their own growth and learn practical strategies to support social-emotional development in themselves, their mentees, and their peers.

Identified Practice Gaps/Educational Needs

Despite significant investments in professional development in Qatar’s healthcare and education sectors, current training programs often overlook the integration of adult developmental stages and SECs. Professionals are expected to navigate complexity, build relationships, and lead ethically without structured support for personal and interpersonal growth. This gap hinders resilience, adaptability, and professionals’ well-being. The training addresses this shortfall by combining adult development theory with SEC frameworks to cultivate emotionally intelligent, developmentally adaptive professionals capable of thriving in demanding, human-centered environments.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the adult development stages based on Kegan’s constructive developmental theory.
  2. Identify key social-emotional competencies (SECs) and explore practical development strategies.
  3. Analyze the relationship between adult development stages and the deepening of SECs.
  4. Reflect on their own developmental journey and their current SEC strengths and set up a future plan.
