Essa Abuhelaiqa, MD
Dr. Essa A. Abuhelaiqa received his MD degree from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) in 2011. He then completed the internal medicine residency program at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System in Richmond, Virginia, after which he undertook a fellowship in nephrology and transplant nephrology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is American Board certified in internal medicine, nephrology, and transplant nephrology.
Dr. Abuhelaiqa has received numerous awards, including the WCM-Q Alumni Qatar Contributor Award, the Young Investigator Award at the American Transplant Congress, and Best Oral Research Presentation at the Conference of the American College of Physicians in Qatar. He also received first prize for his presentation at the 11th Annual VCU Health Research Day.
Dr. Abuhelaiqa is currently a nephrology and transplant nephrology consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), where he is also the associate director of the internal medicine residency program, and program director of the nephrology fellowship program. He has completed several outreach missions to developing countries, including the Dominican Republic and Ethiopia. His research interests include BK virus prognostication models and the use of exclusive virtual crossmatch for deceased solid organ allocation.
