A Catalyst for Change: Promoting Health Equity in Global Medical Education in the Post COVID-19 Era

Overview

The AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) Program and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have partnered to establish a conference entitled: A Catalyst for Change: Promoting Health Equity in Global Medical Education in the Post COVID-19 Era. The goal of the activity is to share regional, national and international innovations and educational responses to the new teaching and learning environment brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to look forward to future global trends.

The pandemic has had a huge global impact on healthcare education as academic institutions shutdown and had to transition from face-to-face to online delivery modalities. Educators were faced with a need to rapidly identify innovative and impactful strategies for teaching and learning. This highlighted the urgent need to promote global health equity and to identify strategies to minimize disparities in access to resources, and to support this global need through international partnerships and student exchange programs, there by building a diverse and equitable healthcare workforce.

This activity will bridge this identified gap and need by providing an opportunity for physicians and other healthcare practitioners to enhance their competence by learning about best practices for the delivery and assessment of medical education during a crisis. The activity will also help participants develop their ability to identify barriers and to devise strategies to overcome the impact of the pandemic on the global healthcare education.

Overall Objectives

At the end of this activity, participants will:

  1. Outline the challenges and opportunities for creating new paradigms that promote an equitable global health education post COVID-19 era
  2. Discuss innovative practices for developing and sustaining international partnerships during COVID and beyond
  3. Identify aspects of diversity and equity in student mobility challenges and institutional responses prior to, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic
