Manuel Jose Rodriguez Ortega

Professor
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
University of Cordoba
Cordoba, Spain

Professor Manuel Jose Rodriguez Ortega obtainined his degree and PhD in biochemistry at the University of Córdoba, Spain. During a three-month predoctoral stay at the Molecular Biology Institute in Bergen, Norway, he learned proteomics techniques. He then became interested in mass spectrometry and completed a three-year postdoctoral stay at Chiron/Novartis in Siena, Italy to learn this method, supported by a Marie Curie fellowship. In 2007, he returned to Córdoba with a tenure-track position, and has secured continuous funding  (nine grants from European, national and regional calls) to establish his independent research lines consisting of the identification of surface proteins of pathogenic bacteria for vaccine and diagnostic purposes, as well as the study of the effect of new antimicrobials on bacteria at multiomic level. In addition, he has started a new research line to identify bioactive peptides in foods using proteomics.

In 2012 he gained a permanent position as associate professor, and in 2022 he became full professor. To date, he has authored 41 publications (>1500 citations), most of them in the first quartile of their respective areas. He also holds two patents for novel inventions. He has supervised four PhD theses, 14 master theses and nine bachelor theses. He has evaluated projects for national and foreign research agencies, he regularly reviews articles in scientific journals from different areas and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Proteomics.
