Ms. Julie Smith is a professor in the School of Communication at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, where she has taught media-related courses for fifteen years. She is the author of Master the Media: How Teaching Media Literacy Can Save our Plugged-In World and her second book, Wake Them Up! Supercharging Engagement in Your College Classroom will be out this spring.

Ms. Smith's research interests include media literacy, the spread of misinformation online, and social media and its emotional effects. She has presented in the US, Europe and South America on media literacy and its importance as a 21st century survival skill. 

Ms. Smith travels extensively, giving workshops to teachers, students and parent groups about maintaining positive digital identities. Her novel approach focuses less on bullying and more about the curation of positive information, personal branding and tools to verify online information. She has three sons and a very patient husband. This is her first time in Doha and she is thrilled to be here.
