Dr. Abdul-Salam S. Sultan, DM, is an Internist and Social Anthropologist (BA). His main interest is the teaching and learning of communication skills "CS" for healthcare professionals. Sultan is the CME Director and Communication Skills project manager at the National Training and Human Development Center in the Ministry of Health, Iraq. He introduced experiential learning of CS into the medical teaching environment, and he leads the national training program. He has also produced dozens of interviewing videos in Arabic as teaching tools for CS training courses. Sultan authored the Arabic textbook The Art of Dialogue in Medical Encounters which is in its third edition, and is in the process of translation into the Kurdish language, as well as 20+ other publications.

His talk will concentrate on why Arab countries are lagging behind others in introducing CS into their health schools and practice, using Iraq as an example. It will also focus on how we can improve the teaching and learning of CS in the region and adopt patient-centered care.
