Communication is a core component to delivering safe, effective and compassionate care to our patients. This workshop aims to enhance the communication skills of Physicians in delivering bad news in a way that is tailored to the patient’s and family’s needs while providing the required emotional support. The workshop will also provide training in eliminating the communication barriers between the patient and the physicians and improving the quality of health care services delivered to our patients. Participants will: develop a framework for Breaking Bad News (SPIKES); tailor the Consultation to meet patient and family needs; and describe strategies to respond with empathy when delivering bad news. We recognize that as a practicing physician, you have a great deal of experience in communication with patients. At this 3-hour workshop, you will join similarly experienced physicians in a multi-disciplinary setting to build upon your communication strengths. This is an interactive, participatory training where we will discuss, practice, and reflect upon communication with patients and families in healthcare. The Workshop is restricted to licensed Physicians only.
