Trophies and medals were presented to the sportsmen and women of WCMC-Q following strong performances in a variety of events organized for the Qatar Foundation community.

Students and teaching assistants who took part in the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) tournaments met in the student lounge on Wednesday 12 December where they received their prizes from Mohammed Al-Nufal, trainee research specialist at WCMC-Q and coach of the football and volleyball teams.

WCMC-Q’s volleyball team won first place after beating a team comprised of players from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies and Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. In addition to winning the tournament, WCMC-Q players also scooped awards for their performances in the event, held in early December - chemistry teaching assistant Vanessa Leonhard picked up the prize for best player, while second year medical student Rami Al Adham won the award for best spiker.

Paying tribute to her fellow players, Leonhard said: “I think the reason we did so well is that we had a great team spirit and a real sense of togetherness.

“In a team sport like volleyball a good team ethic is really important and gives you the edge over opponents who haven’t got such a close-knit team. We are really pleased to have won and we had a lot of fun at the same time.”

WCMC-Q finished in fifth place in the football tournament, which was held throughout November and December. Rivals Texas A&M University at Qatar ran out as the overall winners, but WCMC-Q third year medical students Alhasan Sedeeq and Saif Aldeen Al-Rawas received awards in recognition of their strong performances.

There was further success for WCMC-Q athletes in other events, with third year medical student Arunima Bera clinching first place in the HBKU women’s fitness competition and second year medical student Sivacharan Buddhavarapu finishing runner-up in the bowling tournament.
